Four Kinds of Journals I Keep

Hey everyone! Happy Wednesday once again!

This past week has been kind of difficult for me. My depression has been hitting me kind of hard. I've been lacking a lot of motivation to do anything and have just felt kind of tired and unhappy about most things. Not to mention I'm having some serious self-doubt about my writing and everything related to that and have just been feeling overwhelmed, even though I don't have a lot to do. So, I thought I'd go easy on myself and share something fun with all of you!

I love journals and notebooks and always have at least three or four of them on my bed next to my desk at all times. They all serve a different purpose and almost all of them have been super helpful in keeping myself organized as a writer. So here are the five kinds of journals I am always using.

  • My idea/brainstorming/plotting journal. I've been using this kind for years and it's been super helpful in keeping me organized. I write everything in there. From plot bunnies to expanding upon ideas to plotting out current works in progress. Plus, it's sort of become the notebook I use a little bit of everything for. There are notes in there from the class I'm currently doing, lists of all kinds. It's the place where I dump the contents of my mind into.

  • Prayer Journal. I started prayer journaling on and off a long time ago. I think I started it officially like in 2014 or 2015. Sometimes I'm super consistent and other times I go days or weeks without writing in it. I don't know how other people keep a prayer journal but I write my prayers in there, kind of like letters to God. My earlier ones were giant, messy letters full of rants about whatever I was having trouble with at the time.
  • Story Bibles. I just recently got into this and so far it's been super helpful in keeping me organized. Before finishing the first draft of St. Croix Falls, I decided to devote a whole journal to the book and the series so I don't lose any facts. That has always been one of my huge struggles. When starting a series I always get so disorganized and end up scribbling little bits of plot here and there in different notebooks. Then when I need those details I have to go through all my recent journals to find what I was looking for. And a book that I've been working on for years? Yeah, those details and plot points are in a whole bunch of journals on my shelf that I would have to go through page by page to find what I'm looking for. It's a big mess and hassle. So far having it all in one spot has been super helpful and I plan to do this for Moon Hollow (my camp nanowrimo WIP) too.
  • Writer Journal. Another thing I just recently added. Like yesterday actually. Yesterday was a pretty hard day. I was feeling super low energy, super unmotivated and just blah all day. So maybe that's why I felt the need to do something productive like make a whole new journal to help organize my cluttered thoughts. So I now have a writer's journal where I have a section devoted to the different WIPs I'm working on, a weekly to-do list, word count tracker and a place for miscellaneous lists.

So, yeah, those are the four kinds of journals I keep!

Do you enjoy journaling? What kind of journals do you use?

    1. Ooh cool, I've never heard of calendar journaling. Yes it is! That's one of the reasons I love it so much because I can record and share all my thoughts and what I've been up to on here. :)

  2. Journaling is so much fun! This summer has been so busy that I haven't really been able to that much (which stresses me out! I need to write down my thoughts!), but I hope to catch up soon. All of your journals are so pretty!

Happy Friday! So, they awesome Lily Cat tagged me in this fictional vacation/would you rather challenge and I am so excited to do this. It sounds so fun! Alright so here's the deal:   ~ Include the graphic  Madeline  made. ~ Answer the Questions  ~ Tag some other people if you feel so inclined Let's jump right into this!  Would you rather...  Train with demigods for the summer at Camp Halfblood OR attend Hogwarts to learn some spells for a semester? These movies were a disgrace to the books buuut I needed a gif so here you go haha How is this even a question? ;) Camp Halfblood of course! I adore the Percy Jackson series, so I would do just about anything to be a halfblood for the Summer. The real question is, who would my parent be?? My enneagram four side who loves being special and different wants me to be a kid of one of the big three... maybe Hades just to make myself extra special and unique from everyone else ;) But m...

How to Revise like a Pantser ft. Big Hero 6 Gifs

Happy Wednesday everyone! I hope you've had a great week so far and that you have a great Easter weekend ahead! We plan on going to my grandparent's on Friday to celebrate Easter with family and spending the night there so that'll be a fun time. :) Alright, so I contemplated doing an Easter-y post on here but I wasn't even sure what that would look like... So instead, I thought I'd do something fun and happy in honor of the celebration of Easter on Sunday. Without further ado, here is your Big Hero 6 gif filled revising process from a real life pantser: The end of your first draft is in sight! You type like crazy, stay up past your normal bedtime until it is finished. When you type The End, the satisfaction that you actually did this thing sets in. Guys, it is the sweetest feeling ever. Knowing you worked so hard to complete this draft and came out on the other side. Unscathed? Perhaps not. But triumphant? Definitely! That first draft is a total disast...

Best Resources for Writers

Happy Wednesday once more everyone! So recently I've been doing a lot of craft-learning and have discovered some pretty awesome resources that have been so helpful to me. I'm also contemplating trying my hand at a How To guide for writers. I've already written a How to Write a Serial book and it just needs to be touched up. I think I might make it one of my freebies for my newsletter. So then not only do you get a short story but also a how to guide cuz I realized a lot of the newsletters I sign up for come with how to guides or writerly resources. But anyways, here are some of my favorite books/podcasts/blogs that have been so, so helpful to me over the past few months: Craft Books: Go Teen Writers: Edit Your Novel by Stephanie Morril and Jill Williamson: This one has a little bit of everything in it and is perfect for beginners. If you've just started plotting your novel, are in the middle of writing it or have begun the editing process this is a must have!  ...
