Don't Get Too Caught Up on Worldbuilding

Right now I'm reading through and revising Golden and writing the third book in the trilogy, Bronze simultaneously. Being immersed in the sci-fi world of Renee once more, I'm starting to really stress about the world-building. I'm not a very good world-builder, maybe that's why I prefer writing stories that are in the here and now with hidden worlds. It just makes life and world-building a little easier. I used to write fantasy and I'm pretty good at that sort of world-building, probably because I've been so immersed in those worlds since I was little. Plus, you have complete free reign to do whatever you want. In sci-fi you have that too, to a point. But sci-fi also has lots of gadgets and sciency stuff and I know not everything needs to be explained. I'm not a sciency, mechanic sort of person. I love the sci-fi world, from Star Wars to Star Trek to Firefly to Starflight by Melissa Landers. I loved the shows Star-crossed and Roswell (especially Roswell!)...

Revising Is Hard

Look, I have some ideas for blog posts... but I don't know how to write them. I know what I want to write about but the words won't transfer from my brain to the computer screen... so instead of figuring out how to write what I want to write about, I'm going to procrastinate by writing this blog post about writer's block. Honestly, its a Sunday, I'm tired, my brain feels kind of fried and I'm not feeling the motivation to write even though... I want to write? I don't know if any other writer has felt this way but sometimes I just get this itch to write. This need to write something, to transfer what I'm feeling right now, all this pent up writerly energy, into a story. But I don't know what story! Because I definitely feel no draw or motivation at all to continue writing revision scenes for Silver... I'm still waiting on Project Hellion beta readers before working on that. I just wrote like four short stories that I have to revise. I don't wa...

Friday in Review: Finishing a First Draft (Golden!)

GUYS! I just finished the first draft of Golden and it feels amazing!!  I know this isn't normally what I talk about on Friday's but honestly I didn't have a post planned and I'm feeling not so great today so this post will be short and sweet. The first draft of Golden has been finished at 73,005 words and 249 pages and like twenty-five chapters give or take (yeah the chapters in this book are excruciatingly long... revising is going to be hard...). I've never felt this passionate or excited about something I've written before... like ever. Weapon Icean was definitely exciting and fun to write but I didn't connect with Delphi nearly as much as I have with Renee and my smaller cast of individuals in Golden. I started writing Golden when my anxiety was starting to come back and was right in the middle of writing it when my anxiety got really bad for the first time in a while. Renee really took the brunt of that anxiety. I talked about that last week so I...

Me Gushing about Golden and Treating Your Writing like a Job

So frankly, the last few weeks -- and days especially -- have been hard. I thought I was doing better with my anxiety, I thought the medicine I was taking was working really well, and then something just snapped and it came rushing back over the past few weeks. Along with anxiety, depression always follows so it feels like I'm fighting two things at once. And despite me feeling like a mess (and maybe just being a little bit of a mess) over the past few weeks, I realized something really awesome. My writing has always been my passion, my love, something that brings me joy, and ya sometimes it was a reprieve from the hardships of life. But mostly it was just something that I loved to do and I've been treating it like "work" since Weapon Icean is published and I've been trying to get it out there while also working hard on book two (which is taking waaay longer than I thought it would). If you want to be serious about your writing and either be traditionally publis...
