I feel like I haven't done one of these in forever!! Which is so sad because I love writing these things. I guess I've just been busy with other things and haven't really had a book/TV show/movie to write about. But now I do! How can I not write about the Defenders? It was just so good!
So, first off, the writers of that show and all of the Netflix Marvel shows are really amazing. I watched all of Iron Fist and loved, loved, loved that show! I watched a few episodes of Daredevil and I know a lot of people liked that show but I just couldn't get into it for some reason even though I really wanted to and I didn't watch Jessica Jones or Luke Cage at all. But Iron Fist was what reeled me in. But what's so impressive and awesome is that I didn't have to watch all four shows to understand and enjoy The Defenders. And by the end I really liked all four characters a lot. Jessica Jones I was a little iffy about at the beginning, she's definitely an acquired taste. But I fell in love with Luke Cage. I really liked how even though he's invincible and super strong he isn't prone to violence and he doesn't like violence. He loves Harlem and he loves the people who live in Harlem and just wants to do good and protect them. I found him probably the most heroic and chivalrous and admirable of all of the four.
I've always liked the character Daredevil, I like the idea of his character and I really liked Matt Murdoch in Defenders. I thought he was a great character and honestly a little funny. I think the funniest thing that stood out to me about Matt was when they all meet and are staying at the Royal Dragon and he was just like freaking out about his secret identity. I mean, yeah, that's really sweet and admirable that he wants to protect the people he loves by hiding his identity buut like, it was just really funny seeing him just freak about no, no! I can't show you guys my face! And he's so closed off and, I mean, everyone else is on there too, to a point (except for Danny. He'd shout from the rooftops that he's the Immortal Iron Fist)
but they were all willing to share important information with the group for the greater good. Matt... not so much. But I really like him and I thought the whole storyline with him and Elektra was really beautiful and sweet.
And Danny? By now I'm a broken record, but I don't care! I just love him so much! I think his character and personality is wholly original and unique and I love it! He's hard to explain too. I would say he's a bit naïve and overly trusting, while also being sort of guarded and careful. He gets frustrated and irritated and sometimes a little mad but somehow is always cool and calm and in control. It feels like he's a walking contradiction, which I find very fascinating. His smile is the best thing ever and he's just sort of adorable with how deadpan serious he is when he talks about Kun Lun and the Iron Fist and all that mystical stuff. Like he believes whole heartedly in what he is saying because technically its all true. But to the rest of the world he sounds like a crazy person. I just love how he's like super serious and like takes a deep breath, looks the person straight in the eye as if he's taking a risk telling them this and says I am the Immortal Iron Fist.
It's honestly really funny. And everyone's reaction to him and pretty much everything he says is the funniest thing. I thought Colleen was wonderful and I loved how Danny and her stick by each other's sides no matter what. Colleen would do anything for Danny and he would do anything for her and they are the only true ones on each other's teams if that makes sense. Plus, just how excited he was to like have "superhero friends" was adorable.
Ok, I don't think I have it all out of my system but I'll stop gushing about Danny now. Another thing that was really interesting about the show was the color schemes.
I know some others have noticed it and it's not a huge part of the story but it did add to the show in a big way. Each show has their own, like, color scheme, almost like when they were filming it they put the scenes through a filter. Jessica Jones is blue, Daredevil is red, Luke Cage is yellow and Danny is green and when they're in their separate scenes their color scheme shows through. Really, I think that's one of the reasons why I couldn't do Daredevil or Jessica Jones. Their shows, on a technical level were very dark. Daredevil, even during the day, had a lot of shadows and just dark and Jessica had a lot of dark tones and undertones and shadows and blue. Whereas Iron Fist had a yellowish-green glow and was very bright and felt lighter and even though darker things happened in that show the lighter color scheme put my mind at ease and made it feel not so dark or scary or dangerous. I thought it was a very cool touch in the Defenders though and there was a particular scene in the Royal Dragon where Matt is on one side of the shot and Danny is on the other and the red of the sign is showing through behind Matt and there's green from a light overhead shining behind Danny and it was just a really neat shot.
I loved how each character had their own subplots and things going on because it made us feel like we were almost watching their individual shows at first. Fans of Luke Cage got to see his storyline keep going. He got out of prison and stuff. Fans of Jessica Jones got to see how she is after what happened in her show. Daredevil fans saw the repercussions of the season finale of Daredevil and fans of Iron Fist got to see where he and Colleen are in their fight against the Hand. Each character was given their due and their time. And I loved how each character interacted with each other and the writers sort of paired the four up. Jessica and Matt sort of got thrown together and despite Jessica's closed-offness, well both of their closed-offness, I think they did sort of bond and I think they were friends by the end. Their personalities meshed well and I think it was a smart pairing.
And of course Danny and Luke (heroes for hire anyone?!). I thought they were really great and funny together and really played off each other well. Danny is so steeped in the mystical aspect of the Marvel universe whereas Luke has his feet solidly on the ground and is very skeptical of the whole mystical part of the Hand. So when they were together they sort of clashed, but in a good way and sometimes comical way.
As for plot, I was amazed that Marvel actually created an original character for the show! Like Marvel never does that now adays. Yeah they may create "original" characters with new back stories and names but they've been doing a lot of passing on the torch. Giving Iron Man's job to, I think this is her name Iron Heart. Or just passing on the mantel of a name or the idea of iconic characters like Wolverine and Captain America and Thor to a new and younger generation of heroes and if they're not doing that then they're bringing back old characters (which I'm fine with! I love when older characters or characters that haven't really gotten a spotlight finally get to shine or come for more) and change them in huge ways that completely change them as characters and almost make them different people entirely. I really liked Alexandra as the bad guy.
She was cunning and smart and a great antagonist. She was actively involved in capturing the Iron Fist and causing obstacles for the Defenders and she surrounded herself with a very alive and well done and portrayed group of villains as well. Elektra coming back and being an antagonist was very interesting too and gave Matt conflict and gave the story more depth, especially by the second to last and last episode.
And I really liked the way they handled the plot overall. How it centered a lot on the Iron Fist because he's the key and the Hand wants him and how that gave the Defenders conflict but also brought them together. They pulled a lot from Daredevil as well. Luke and Jessica definitely had their screen time and were main, integral characters in the show but Danny and Matt, I feel, were ultimately the true main characters of the show. They had the most to loose. It was personal for the two of them in very deep, meaningful ways. Matt had Elektra and Stick to tether him to the Hand and Danny had, well, pretty much his entire life. His parents deaths, Colleen, pretty much every bad thing that happened to him in the first season of his show, not to mention it was very personal for Colleen too. I went into the show sort of unsure what to expect or what I wanted and was pleasantly surprised at how well done and clean and cut the plot was. It was great. Also, the ending was very fitting and well done as well. The Defenders wasn't just something for the fans. It isn't just an oooh, how fun crossover. It forwarded the character's individual plots and shows. Jessica and Luke and Danny and Matt all ended up in different, necessary places for their shows to start up again. It ended sort of like an individual TV show would, with you wanting to know more and watch more of each of their shows and I thought that was really well done and great.
One more thing. The fighting scenes. The fighting scenes were EPIC!!
They were so well done and so cool and just completely awesome! Especially the ones where the Defenders were pitted against each other. Like Luke and Danny fighting, Matt sort of toying with Jessica and all of them pitted against Danny (which was one of the coolest and most epic fighting sequences ever because they are all so powerful and it was so cool to see). Not to mention all of the fighting scenes with the Hand and Jessica and Luke using their super strength and Matt and Danny using martial arts and Colleen battling it out with her katana.
So there you have it, some of my thoughts on the Defenders. My recommendation? Watch it! Even if you've only watched one of the shows or even if you haven't watched any of that, go watch it! I promise you once your finished, you'll want to go back and watch all four of the shows.
