Hi everyone! So I love Marissa Meyer's Lunar Chronicles series and I own them all and have read them all and when I saw that she was coming out with a companion to the series I just about flipped out with excitement.
The enchantment continues....
The universe of the Lunar Chronicles holds stories—and secrets—that are wondrous, vicious, and romantic. How did Cinder first arrive in New Beijing? How did the brooding soldier Wolf transform from young man to killer? When did Princess Winter and the palace guard Jacin realize their destinies?
With nine stories—five of which have never before been published—and an exclusive never-before-seen excerpt from Marissa Meyer’s upcoming novel, Heartless, about the Queen of Hearts from Alice in Wonderland, Stars Above is essential for fans of the bestselling and beloved Lunar Chronicles.
Her characters are fantastic, her plots inspire me to be a better writer and the writing in itself is amazing! She's one of the best writers that I've read in a long time. But I was hesitant to buy Stars Above (and I ended up getting it from the library). Why? Mostly because I read a little piece of A. G. Howard's companion to her Splintered series. Now I love A. G. Howard and I am beyond excited for her two new books coming out but I wasn't all that impressed with the first short story in the companion Untamed. I feel like maybe she had an off time with that one and so I was then hesitant with Stars Above because I just figured if Howard had a hard time then why wouldn't Meyer too. I was sorely mistaken.
So I went to the library and it was my lucky day! They actually had Stars Above there about to be reshelved and I got it just in time! I was so excited! And I wasn't disappointed. All the stories in that book were amazing. I loved how Marissa Meyer gave each of her characters their own short story, like a little way of respectfully ushering them out and the whole book was a heartwarming, sad, sappy goodbye to my favorite characters who became close friends. Cinder, Scarlet, Kai, Wolf, Jacin, Winter, Cress and Carswell and even Scarlet's grandma (saddest thing ever!) got their turn to say goodbye to us readers. It was just so wonderful.
I loved reading in the point of view of Michelle Benoit (Scarlet's grandmother) in The Keeper but also getting a sneak peek into a little, headstrong and stubborn Scarlet. There's Wolf's gut-wrenching story to becoming a soldier and the awesomeness of reading about a young school kid Carswell Thorne! Which was just plain amazingness because I mean who doesn't want to read about a high school Carswell?? And reading about little Cress? That little, adorable, daydreaming girl that is the ultimate shy, under-confidant and quiet character that I can relate too so much. That one was a sort of sad story that shows what Cress went through as a little girl and you just want to grab her from the pages and give her a big hug and tell her that she's not alone and that she'll be ok.
I have to say though I think one of my favorites (and the longest story in the book) was The Princess and the Guard. It was so great to read how Winter and Jacin's relationship evolved as they got older and how they grew and became the man and woman that they were in Winter. Plus, it's Jacin and I love him so much. The story that made me smile the whole time was The Mechanic. Marrisa Meyer switched the point of view to Kai in the scene when he and Cinder first meet and it was so adorable and cute because that's just Kai in a nutshell. Adorable and cute.
I also loved how Marissa Meyer arranged the stories, staring with when Cinder first came to Michelle Benoit in a suspension tank and then when she went to live with Adri and the girls and it went through more like a timeline than anything else and ending with two years after Winter which I think was a really smart and cool move on Marissa Meyer's part.
Speaking of the huge finale, Something Old, Something New I just about had a heart attack just reading that one. It was so beautiful and wonderful and I won't say anything that could spoil it because if you've read the series than you have to read Stars Above, especially Something Old, Something New. I'll just say that it was so coo and beautiful to see where our favorite characters and couples have been doing in the past two years and how their still so close and so friendly toward one another. It's in the point of view of Cinder but Marissa Meyer still gave each of the other characters the farewell they deserved (hint, hint: especially Wolf and Scarlet).
Not to mention the writing was suburb and makes me want to write and get better at my writing. Stars Above -- and the whole Lunar Chronicles for that matter -- has inspired me so much and I can't wait to see what Marissa Meyer has in store for her characters, especially Iko, in Wires and Nerves.
So, if you haven't read The Lunar Chronicles yet I suggest you check it out and once your finished go get Stars Above because it's a definite must read and just the right book to finish the series off that'll put a smile on your face.
I hope you all have a great weekend and have a great Friday everyone!
