My 2016 TBR List

Here's a list of books that I can't wait to read this year. (Along with some books that I didn't get around to reading in 2015.)

  • The Bureau of Time by Brett Michael Orr (His debut novel I believe that I can't wait to get around to reading.)

Cassandra Wright is a Timewalker ā€“ a teenager with a genetic mutation that allows her to manipulate the flow of time. But her inexplicable powers have made her a target for Adjusters ā€“ monstrous assassins from a parallel universe.

Saved from almost certain death, Cassie is pulled into a secret agency sworn to defend our timeline against these threats: the Bureau of Temporal Integrity, Monitoring, and Execution. Cassieā€™s life soon becomes entwined with Shaun Briars ā€“ a reckless Timewalker with an alluring smile and dark suspicions about the Bureau itself.

When Cassie and Shaun cross into the parallel universe, they discover a world in the grips of nuclear winter, with a new war threatening to spill over into our universe. With time running out, they must learn the true history of Timewalkers, confront the unforgivable crimes of their future selves, and defy their own fate to save two worlds.

  • Deceptive by Emily Lloyd-Jones (The sequel to the awesome book Illusive about super-powered criminals.)

You donā€™t belong with us.

These are the words that echo through the minds of all immune Americansā€”those suffering the so-called adverse effects of an experimental vaccine, including perfect recall, body manipulation, telepathy, precognition, levitation, mind-control, and the ability to change oneā€™s appearance at will.

When great numbers of immune individuals begin to disappear, fear and tension mount, and unrest begins to brew across the country. Through separate channels, super-powered teenagers Ciere, Daniel, and Devon find themselves on the case; supercriminals and government agents working side-by-side. Itā€™s an effort that will ultimately define them all, for better or for worse.

Pairing high-stakes action with a compelling cast of superhuman characters, Emily Lloyd-Jonesā€™s thrilling sequel to Illusive will have readers on the edge of their seats.

  • Circle of Jinn by Lori Goldstein (I bought the first book Becoming Jinn and loved it!)

Being Jinn is Azraā€™s new reality. As she grants wishes under the watchful eye of the Afrit council, she remains torn between her two worldsā€”human and Jinn. Soon, secrets spill. Zars are broken. Humans become pawns. And rumors of an uprising become real as the Afritā€™s reach extends beyond the underground world of Janna.

Straddling the line becomes impossible. Aware of her unique abilities, Azra must not just face but embrace her destiny. But when the role she must play and those she must protect expand to include a circle of Jinn greater than her own, Azra will be forced to risk everything. A risk that means thereā€™s everything to lose, and at the same time, everything to gainā€”for herself and her entire Jinn race.

In this dramatic sequel to Becoming Jinn, Azraā€™s story comes to a heartfelt and thrilling conclusion.

  • A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J. Maas (I fell in love with A Court of Thorns and Roses. Literally I got it from the library and reread it several times and I plan on getting it for my birthday so that it can have a permanent spot on my shelf.)

Feyre survived Amarantha's clutches to return to the Spring Court--but at a steep cost. Though she now has the powers of the High Fae, her heart remains human, and it can't forget the terrible deeds she performed to save Tamlin's people.

Nor has Feyre forgotten her bargain with Rhysand, High Lord of the feared Night Court. As Feyre navigates its dark web of politics, passion, and dazzling power, a greater evil looms--and she might be key to stopping it. But only if she can harness her harrowing gifts, heal her fractured soul, and decide how she wishes to shape her future--and the future of a world cleaved in two.

With more than a million copies sold of her beloved Throne of Glass series, Sarah J. Maas's masterful storytelling brings this second book in her seductive and action-packed series to new heights.

  • Keeper of the Lost Cities 5 by Shannon Messenger (She hasn't come out with a title yet but that doesn't matter. All of her books have a permanent spot on my TBR list.)

Out: 2016
  • The Shadow Queen by C.J. Redwine (I think this is her debut novel and I saw it, read the synopsis and was like yep I'm reading this when it comes out.)

Lorelai Diederich, crown princess and fugitive at large, has one mission: kill the wicked queen who took both the Ravenspire throne and the life of her father. To do that, Lorelai needs to use the one weapon she and Queen Irina have in commonā€”magic. Sheā€™ll have to be stronger, faster, and more powerful than Irina, the most dangerous sorceress Ravenspire has ever seen.

In the neighboring kingdom of Eldr, when Prince Kolā€™s father and older brother are killed by an invading army of magic-wielding ogres, the second-born prince is suddenly given the responsibility of saving his kingdom. To do that, Kol needs magicā€”and the only way to get it is to make a deal with the queen of Ravenspire, promise to become her personal huntsmanā€¦and bring her Lorelaiā€™s heart.

But Lorelai is nothing like Kol expectedā€”beautiful, fierce, and unstoppableā€”and despite dark magic, Lorelai is drawn in by the passionate and troubled king. Fighting to stay one step ahead of the dragon huntsmanā€”who she likes far more than she shouldā€”Lorelai does everything in her power to ruin the wicked queen. But Irina isnā€™t going down without a fight, and her final move may cost the princess the one thing she still has left to lose.

  • Untamed by A.G. Howard (Because it's Alice in Wonderland and it's the companion to the Splintered series and I happen to be in love with those book.)

A post-Ensnared collection of three storiesā€”available in both print and e-versions.

Alyssa Gardner went down the rabbit hole and took control of her destiny. She survived the battle for Wonderland and the battle for her heart. In this collection of three novellas, join Alyssa and her family as they look back at their memories of Wonderland.

In Six Impossible Things, Alyssa recalls the most precious moments of her life after Ensnared, and the role magic plays in preserving the happiness of those she loves. Alyssaā€™s mother reminisces about her own time in Wonderland and rescuing the man who would become her husband in The Boy in the Web. And Morpheus delves into Jebā€™s memories of the events of Splintered in The Moth in the Mirror, available in print for the first time.

This collection expands upon Ensnared's epilogue, and includes some deleted scenes to provide a ā€œdirectorā€™s cutā€ glimpse into the past and futures of our favorite Splintered characters.

  • The Kiss of Deception by Mary E. Pearson (This book has been on TBR list for a while but I haven't gotten around to reading it. Hopefully this year will be the year that I get it and read it.)

A princess must find her place in a reborn world.

She flees on her wedding day.

She steals ancient documents from the Chancellor's secret collection.

  • The Key to Extraordinary by Natalie Lloyd (I loved her other book A Snicker of Magic. It was beautifully written and I can't wait to dig into this one.)

Everyone in Emma's family is special. Her ancestors include Revolutionary War spies, brilliant scientists, and famous musicians--every single one of which learned of their extraordinary destiny through a dream.

For Emma, her own dream can't come soon enough. Right before her mother died, Emma promised that she'd do whatever it took to fulfill her destiny, and she doesn't want to let her mother down.

But when Emma's dream finally arrives, it points her toward an impossible task--finding a legendary treasure hidden in her town's cemetery. If Emma fails, she'll let down generations of extraordinary ancestors . . . including her own mother. But how can she find something that's been missing for centuries and might be protected by a mysterious singing ghost?

With her signature blend of lyrical writing, quirky humor, and unforgettable characters, Natalie Lloyd's The Key to Extraordinary cements her status as one of the most original voices writing for children today.

  • Let the Wind Rise by Shannon Messenger (I have been waiting for this book for two years and it comes out in a few months.)

The breathtaking action and whirlwind adventure build to a climax in this thrilling conclusion to the ā€œremarkably unpredictableā€ (BCCB) Sky Fall trilogy from the bestselling author of the Keeper of the Lost Cities series.

Vane Weston is ready for battle. Against Raidenā€™s army. Against the slowly corrupting Gale Force. Even against his own peaceful nature as a Westerly. Heā€™ll do whatever it takes, including storming Raidenā€™s icy fortress with the three people he trusts the least. Anything to bring Audra home safely.

But Audra wonā€™t wait for someone to rescue her. She has Gusā€”the guardian she was captured with. And she has a strange ā€œguideā€ left behind by the one prisoner who managed to escape Raiden. The wind is also rising to her side, rallying against their common enemy. When the forces align, Audra makes her playā€”but Raiden is ready.

Freedom has never held such an impossible price, and both groups know the sacrifices will be great. But Vane and Audra started this fight together. Theyā€™ll end it the same way.

  • Dissonance by Mariella Hunt (This one has also been on my TBR list for a while and I plan to read it this year.)

Fifteen-year-old Allie Grant lives crippled by her illness. Though kept in isolation, sheā€™s never alone: A spirit named Song lurks in the silence of her bedroom.

When Song reveals its dark nature on the night of her recital, the show ends in tragedy. Verging on death, Allieā€™s taken in by an uncle sheā€™s never met.

  • Glass Sword by Victoria Aveyard (The sequel to Red Queen because Red Queen was painful and amazing and I loved it.

Mare Barrowā€™s blood is redā€”the color of common folkā€”but her Silver ability, the power to control lightning, has turned her into a weapon that the royal court tries to control.

The crown calls her an impossibility, a fake, but as she makes her escape from Maven, the princeā€”the friendā€”who betrayed her, Mare uncovers something startling: she is not the only one of her kind.

Pursued by Maven, now a vindictive king, Mare sets out to find and recruit other Red-and-Silver fighters to join in the struggle against her oppressors.

But Mare finds herself on a deadly path, at risk of becoming exactly the kind of monster she is trying to defeat.

Will she shatter under the weight of the lives that are the cost of rebellion? Or have treachery and betrayal hardened her forever?

  • Jackaby by William Ritter (I recently learned about this book and read the synopsis and realized that I needed to read this. Soon.)

ā€œMiss Rook, I am not an occultist,ā€ Jackaby said. ā€œI have a gift that allows me to see truth where others see the illusion--and there are many illusions. All the worldā€™s a stage, as they say, and I seem to have the only seat in the house with a view behind the curtain.ā€

Newly arrived in New Fiddleham, New England, 1892, and in need of a job, Abigail Rook meets R. F. Jackaby, an investigator of the unexplained with a keen eye for the extraordinary--including the ability to see supernatural beings. Abigail has a gift for noticing ordinary but important details, which makes her perfect for the position of Jackabyā€™s assistant. On her first day, Abigail finds herself in the midst of a thrilling case: A serial killer is on the loose. The police are convinced itā€™s an ordinary villain, but Jackaby is certain itā€™s a nonhuman creature, whose existence the police--with the exception of a handsome young detective named Charlie Cane--deny.

Doctor Who meets Sherlock in William Ritterā€™s debut novel, which features a detective of the paranormal as seen through the eyes of his adventurous and intelligent assistant in a tale brimming with cheeky humor and a dose of the macabre.

  • Heartless by Marissa Meyer (Because its an Alice in Wonderland prequel book about the Queen of Hearts and Marissa Meyer is amazing and I have to read all of her books.)

Long before she was the terror of Wonderland ā€” the infamous Queen of Hearts ā€” she was just a girl who wanted to fall in love.

Catherine may be one of the most desired girls in Wonderland, and a favorite of the yet-unmarried King of Hearts, but her interests lie elsewhere. A talented baker, all she wants is to open a shop with her best friend and supply the Kingdom of Hearts with delectable pastries and confections. But according to her mother, such a goal is unthinkable for the young woman who could be the next Queen.

At a royal ball where Cath is expected to receive the king's marriage proposal, she meets Jest, the handsome and mysterious court joker. For the first time, she feels the pull of true attraction. At the risk of offending the King and infuriating her parents, she and Jest enter into an intense, secret courtship.

Cath is determined to define her own destiny and fall in love on her terms. But in a land thriving with magic, madness, and monsters, fate has other plans.

  • The Strange and Beautiful Sorrows of Ava Lavender by Leslye Walton (Because the cover is gorgeous and the title is just beautiful.)

Magical realism, lyrical prose, and the pain and passion of human love haunt this hypnotic generational saga.

Foolish love appears to be the Roux family birthright, an ominous forecast for its most recent progeny, Ava Lavender. Avaā€”in all other ways a normal girlā€”is born with the wings of a bird.

In a quest to understand her peculiar disposition and a growing desire to fit in with her peers, sixteen-year old Ava ventures into the wider world, ill-prepared for what she might discover and naĆÆve to the twisted motives of others. Others like the pious Nathaniel Sorrows, who mistakes Ava for an angel and whose obsession with her grows until the night of the Summer Solstice celebration.

That night, the skies open up, rain and feathers fill the air, and Avaā€™s quest and her familyā€™s saga build to a devastating crescendo.

First-time author Leslye Walton has constructed a layered and unforgettable mythology of what it means to be born with hearts that are tragically, exquisitely human.

March-May Wrap Up!

Happy Tuesday!  So I had a March/April blog post all written out and forgot to post it! So here's a March-May recap! How has the last three months gone for you? March ended up being a really good month. I turned 25 and had a really great birthday I got to hang out with friends, watch some new shows and am almost done with the Throne of Glass series. April and May have also been really good months for me. God's blessed me in so many amazing ways over the past three months.  I feel bad that this blog has fallen so to the wayside for me. I used to post every week and be so excited and now I just really struggle to keep this updated. I'm starting to think it might be time to let this blog post unless I somehow get renewed motivation/inspiration for it.  March-May Writing:  March was a very good writing month. I just reached 65K in Immortal Circus #3, and despite a few small hiccups, it's been flowing really well. I'm enjoying getting to draft a book after spending ...

Turning 25!

Happy Thursday!  At the end of February I was looking back at my wrap ups on my Instagram and on here and it almost made me start crying because of how far I've come. It made me stop and think about where I started my 20's versus where I am now. So much as changed and so much of it for the better. Just looking back at the pictures and wrap ups I've done over the past year, I feel like I'm thriving. I'm at a place I honestly didn't think I'd ever get to and maybe that was just me being dramatic or living in on and off depression for so many years, but it makes me tear up and so thankful to see how far I've come since 20.  At 20 I had a best friend I thought I would still be best friends with when I turned 25. I had him and two other friends at 20 and that was it. I don't even remember what church we were at five years ago, but it wasn't the church we're at now and I know I definitely was not thriving there. I felt so behind everyone else my a...

A Goodbye to The Archive Series

Happy Friday!  The final book of The Archive Series comes out next Tuesday. This has been almost three years in the making and I don't know what to say to properly say goodbye.  I started this series in December 2019 with Golden Touch. The idea had been sparked by me watching The Road to El Dorado and having a desire to write a treasure hunt story for most of December. Little did I know that the story of a girl finding a boy with a Midas touch up in the mountains to help her family with their money issues would turn into a five book series and be a huge part of my life for the next few years. I also had no idea that that series would get me through one of the hardest years - 2020. Honestly, God knew what 2020 would be like and He knew I was going to need a story and characters that would make me happy, give me joy and focus on during that very hard year. And for me, that was Amaya and Darren and this whole series.  I poured a lot of myself and my story into Amaya and Darr...
